New flights to Europe starting from Cambridge airport

A new Swiss carrier called Darwin Airline is set to open new routes to the continent from the British airport at Cambridge. Destinations include Milan, Amsterdam, Paris and Geneva as of 2 September this year. Initially there will be 24 flights a week to and from Amsterdam, twelve to Paris, eight to Milan and six to Geneva.

This is the first base for the Swiss carrier in the UK, where they will be using the 50-seat SAAB 2000 regional aircrafts. This is latest destination to offer international flights from the UK, following in the footsteps of Stanstead, Luton and most recently Southend.

Steve Jones of Cambridge Airport said: “The opening of this new and exciting base by Darwin Airline is a strategic step in our development of Cambridge as a regional international airport’. He went on to add: “This puts our city firmly on the international transport map, making it easier for people from around the world to get here.”

The plan is to turn the airport into a hub for the east of England, with a number of tour operators already looking into running ski packages from the airport. There are even further plans to open up a route to Naples in December with other routes planned for the coming years.

Airport options for British holidaymakers are definitely growing year-on-year. No longer chained by the twin hubs of Gatwick and Heathrow, more convenient flying is certainly becoming easier to find. With great travel insurance deals out there, budget airlines keeping prices low and a relatively strong pound, this might be a very good time to book yourself a summer holiday.

Other new routes that are opening in the coming months include BMI flying to Munich, Frankfurt and Milan. EasyJet are also now flying to Sardinia and Bergen from Gatwick and British Airways are going to Las Palmas.
