Why Brits love returning to their favourite holiday destinations

A new study by TravelSupermarket has found that many of us Brits return to holiday destinations we visited as a child. The trend has been labelled ‘inherited holidays’ because we get the idea from our parents before us. The trend appears to be driven by a combination of nostalgia and economics.

The survey asked 2,000 British holidaymakers about their holiday preferences and found that 48 per cent of them had visited places recently that they had gone as a child. Nearly a third said they had done this in the last two years.

With the popularity of the staycation, caused in large part by economical reasons, many of us have been returning to favourite holiday destinations from our childhood. The reason in many cases was simply that ‘we know we’ll enjoy ourselves’. It’s a question of minimising risk. Parents also said that they wanted children to have ‘the same experiences we did’.

A spokesman for TravelSupermarket said: “We can’t afford to get a family holiday wrong, especially as the current economic climate is putting pressure on families to get the best value.” Adding: “A trend we've noticed is that families are increasingly likely to return to tried and tested destinations.”

Among the activities that families are keen to recreate in a nod to nostalgia is having an ice cream, building a sandcastle and sending a postcard. Closely followed by fishing in a rock pool and playing games on the beach.

Of course, not all of these nostalgic trips take place in the UK. Many new parents are keen to recreate continental holidays with their kids, just like the ones they enjoyed when they were young. If you’re planning on taking your family away to Europe on a holiday, you need to make sure you are covered by travel insurance. That way you know you’ll be covered should anything happen while you’re away, leaving you free to enjoy a trip down memory lane.
