World’s best airport named for 2013.

Seasoned travellers know what it is like to spend many hours in airports. There’s seldom much to do once you’ve perused the duty free shop other than to sit and wait. However, not all airports have to be like this. If you’ve ever been to Singapore’s Changi Airport you’ll know why. Once again it has been voted the World’s Best Airport for 2013, at an awards ceremony held in Geneva back in April.

It’s the fourth time that Changi has claimed the top spot and was voted for by a huge survey of 12.1 million travellers across 395 airports by research firm Skytrax.

Chairman of Skytrax Edward Plaisted said: “Changi airport continues to be a leader and innovator within the industry and is a key reason why it has remained ranked amongst the top-three airports for the last 14 years of the awards.”

With more than 330 retail outlets and a 120 food and beverage options, there is plenty to choose from at Changi. It served 50 million passengers over the course of 2012 and continues to attract travellers from around the world. Coming second in the awards was last year’s winner Incheon International Airport in South Korea. While third place was claimed by Amsterdam’s Schilphol Airport, largely thanks to its self-service transfers where passengers can skip queues for connecting flights.

You might not think that it makes too much difference which airport you fly to or from but perhaps that’s because you’ve never been to a great one. If you have to spend any significant amount of time waiting, being in a good airport can be as important to your holiday as travel insurance.

Some airports might be little more than a departure lounge and a small duty free shop but it’s good to know that others are really making an effort to provide a good service for passengers and travellers to enjoy.
