Brits Head off for great easter getaway

Record numbers of Brits are heading off to sunnier climes this weekend, as forecasters predict that the UK’s unseasonably cold weather could be with us until the end of April.

Two million UK holidaymakers are set to be packing their bags for a stint overseas, with the number of those flying out this weekend increasing by 30%, compared to the annual average. The most popular destinations for a spot of rest and relaxation abroad include Spain, Tunisia, Egypt and Florida, with skiing trips and city breaks in southern European also proving a hit with British travellers.

Major airports including Gatwick and Heathrow, are expecting a deluge of passengers in the coming weeks, with Gatwick expecting to surpass its previous Easter record with 1.6 million passengers expected to depart from the airport over the next two weeks.

Heathrow is also expecting its busiest week of the year so far, with a peak of 116,000 passengers travelling today (March 28th). Between today (March 28th)and Tuesday approximately 10,000 passengers will be departing from the airport, with many heading to the Big Apple or on a skiing break.

Nick Henderson, Gatwick’s head of head of terminal operations, said: “This Easter is forecast to be one of our busiest. Given the cold weather, it is only to be expected that Britons want to enjoy some sunshine.” Oliver Broad, chairman of the Association of Independent Tour Operators, added: “This could be the biggest Easter getaway we’ve ever experienced. Our 120 members have had a significant increase in last-minute bookings due to the cold.

“We’re also confident passenger numbers will increase after some people stayed at home last year for the Olympics, Paralympics and the Diamond Jubilee.” If you are heading off on holiday in 2013, it is important to secure travel insurance to ensure you are covered in event of an emergency.
