Paris emerges as UK travellers’ favourite city destination

New research has revealed that the City of Love has captured the hearts of Brits abroad, with UK travellers voting Paris as their favourite destination for a city break.

France’s stylish capital trumped New York as the foreign city with the most British visitors, according to 2012 booking figures made through the website Hotels.com. Dublin fell in third place as the city most visited by Brits, climbing up from an 8th place ranking in 2011. This was followed by Amsterdam, Las Vegas and Rome.

Other cities around the world that proved a hit with British globe trotters included Madrid (up to 10th place from 14th place in 2011) and Istanbul (up to 16th place from 20th place in 2011). The research also revealed that several long-haul destinations are falling out of favour with British travellers, with Los Angeles falling three places to 14th, while Las Vegas fell from 2nd place to 5th place.

San Francisco and Orlando also fell by one place, to 11th and 13th place respectively. “With the economy still sluggish, it’s not surprising that many UK travellers elected to save money by holidaying closer to home last year, taking advantage of the stronger pound and weaker euro at that time,” said Kate Hopcraft of Hotels.com.

The report also looked at room rates across major world cities and found that Monte Carlo has the highest room rates at an average of £200 per night. This was followed by Muscat (£188), New York (£179), Rio de Janeiro (£177) and Moscow (£160). The cheapest room rates were found in Southeast Asia, including Phnom Penh (£40), Pattaya (£48), Hanoi (£49), Siem Reap (£51) and Chiang Mai (£53).

Several cities have also seen hotel rates fall including Bogota (-17% to £92), Athens (-10% to £81) and Alicante (-10% to £71). If you are heading off on holiday in 2013, it is important to secure travel insurance whichever destination you are travelling to.
