Age is no obstacle as over 80s jet off to far-flung destinations

It seems age is no barrier to overseas visits, with Age UK revealing that over a quarter of their travel insurance policies in 2012 were taken out by individuals aged 80 and over.

With 27% of all Age UK Travel Insurance policies in 2012 held by those aged 80 plus, hardy Brits are not letting their age prevent them from going on holiday. This is according to customer data from Age UK Enterprises, the commercial arm of the Age UK charity, which found that a further 19% of their travel insurance policies were held by those aged 70-74.

Gordon Morris, Managing Director at Age UK Enterprises, said: “It’s surprising to see many providers refusing cover to older travellers due to their age - we firmly believe that no one should be refused travel insurance based on this.

“Older people’s travel ambitions don’t stop and there needs to be adequate provision to cater for the needs of this group.” The data also showed strong sales of annual trip cover in 2012, and accounted for a third of all policies, indicating that the older generation are jetting off to foreign climes multiple times in a year.

With half of those aged over 80 holidaying in Europe, the continent is the most popular destination with travellers insured with Age UK. However, one in ten of this age group are opting to take out worldwide cover, in order to visit destinations such as the Caribbean, Canada and the US. While those in later life are enjoying numerous holiday destinations, the rest of us are busy finding ways to keep costs down when overseas.

Research by MyVoucherCodes has revealed that, if it was the cheapest available option, almost half of respondents said they would stay at a stranger’s house when holidaying abroad. According to the study, 32% of cash-strapped British holidaymakers will opt to stay in a friend’s house when they go abroad this year, almost the same number who will stay in a hotel (34%). If you are heading off on an overseas break in 2013, it is important to secure travel insurance before you leave.
