Visitor numbers to New York still high

The latest tourism figures from New York reveal that holidaymakers’ love affair with the Big Apple shows no signs of abating, despite the devastation caused by Hurricane Sandy.

Famed for attractions including the Statue of Liberty, Wall Street and cosmopolitan Manhattan neighbourhoods, the US city drew in a staggering 52 million visitors in 2012. New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg and NYC & Company CEO George Fertitta said the record figure was an increase of 2.1% on visitor numbers in 2011.

The data also revealed that room sales also reached record levels last year, with 29 million hotel room nights sold – bringing in record hotel tax revenues of $504 million. The city is well on its way to achieving its goal of reaching 55 million visitors and generating $70 billion for the US economy by 2015, according to Bloomberg.

The Big Apple was recently dubbed the best place in the world to put your glad rags on and party until the sun comes up, with its combination of swanky bars, exclusive nightclubs and up-for-it locals helping to ensure that a night on the tiles New York-style will certainly be one to remember.

The fact that around a million Brits headed over to NYC for spell in 2011 only serves to confirm that city’s status as a ‘must visit’ destination. New York’s thriving restaurant scene is also said to help lure tourists from around the globe. According to restaurant experts Zagat, there were 119 new openings in the Big Apple in 2012, with a trend towards 'more affordable, casual dining'.

Hotels.com spokesperson Alison Couper said: “New York and Las Vegas always provide an amazing travel adventure.” If you are planning a trip to New York or any other destination this year, it is crucial to secure the right type of travel insurance before you leave.
