Maldives among best selling destinations in 2013

The island nation of Maldives has taken the top spot in a ranking of best selling destinations around the world in 2013.

Tour operator Kuoni has said that the Indian Ocean paradise has proved a bookings winner for the firm for the second year running, with singletons and honeymooners alike keen to unwind along the country’s vast stretch of picture perfect beaches.

The list of top ten sellers this year continues with Thailand, Sri Lanka, the US, the UAE, Mauritius, Malaysia, Barbados, Singapore and St Lucia. The operator’s annual travel trends report also forecasts that Vietnam will gain in popularity in 2013, with operators such as Finnair offering services to Hanoi from this summer.

Kuoni also named the top five family-friendly locations across the globe, including Kuramathi in the Maldives. The final four places were occupied by Atlantis the Palm in Dubai, St James Club on Morgan Bay in St Lucia, the Verandah Resort & Spa in neighbouring Antigua, and Long Beach in Mauritius. The Holiday Inn Mai Khao in Phuket was also tipped as one to watch in 2013.

All inclusive holidays, responsible travel and ‘girlfriend power’ (groups of women travelling together) and an increasing use of social media to glean information and advice on our travels were just some of the emerging trends highlighted by the report. “The emergence of a new, planet-conscious consumer will colour holiday choices, so too Generation X and Y who are techno-savvy and will draw on social media to help make their choices,” the report says.

The research also outlines that instead of deterring holidaymakers from jetting off, the fragile state of the UK economy will instead form the incentive needed to get away from it all. “The power of a holiday will not diminish and the allure of the Maldives, Thailand and Sri Lanka will continue,” the report adds. If you are heading off on an overseas break in 2013, it’s important to secure travel insurance before you leave.
