Holiday bookings set to surge this weekend

Travel firms are gearing up for busy weekend ahead, with online holiday bookings set to peak on 6 January, a day which has been dubbed by those in the industry as “Sunshine Sunday”.

The last three years has seen holidaymakers scramble to book their annual breaks in the sun as early in the year as possible and leading operator Thomson is expecting more than two million searches on its website on Sunday, with the highest level of online traffic set to be recorded at 8.45pm. “With Christmas firmly out of the way many people want a holiday in the sunshine to look forward to,” said a spokesman for Thomson.

“Over the last few years we’ve seen a trend towards booking holidays earlier and with record bookings over Christmas we’re expecting the rush to continue.” British Airways, which launched its annual January sale this week, has also predicted that travellers will book breaks abroad in their droves, but argued that Monday, rather than Sunday, would be responsible for a bookings bonanza.

Claire Bentley, managing director of British Airways Holidays, said: “We anticipate a bumper booking day next Monday, with the return to work and start of a new school term, signalling the need for families to have sunnier climes to look forward to.”

Mediterranean gems such as Greece and Majorca are expected to prove a hit with holidaymakers, according to Thomson, while bookings to Mexico, Jamaica and Thailand are also expected to be popular. Destinations such as Florida, Barbados, Las Vegas, Dubai and St Lucia will be at the top of travellers’ wish lists, according to British Airways. The airline also said that New York, Rome, Venice, Barcelona and Berlin would be popular choices for a city break.

Recent research conducted by Skyscanner revealed that of those planning a break abroad in the next 12 months, 71% will opt for one holiday while 42% plan to indulge in at least three. If you are planning a holiday abroad, it’s important to secure travel insurance before you leave.
