Egypt tipped as best value destination

Travellers who are already experiencing a touch of wanderlust just a few days into the New Year will get the most from their money this month by heading to the Land of Pharaohs, according to the latest research.

The Post Office’s recent Travel Money report has tipped Egypt as the best-value destination for an overseas break in January, with the pound’s 7% rise against the Egyptian Pound year-on-year meaning that Brits can indulge in a spot of guilt-free holiday spending.

Egypt emerged as the most wallet-friendly of the ten destinations included in the report, with the average price of a seven-night package holiday plus seven evening meals for two adults coming in at £846.

Despite a revolution in the country nearly two years ago, resulting in a drop in visitor numbers, popular Egyptian resorts such as Sharm el Sheikh, Taba, and Dahab are still predicted to be “the strongest contender for post-Christmas blues bookings,” according to Post Office Travel Money head Andrew Brown. Orlando, Florida, claimed the second spot in the ranking as a result of the pound “buying 3.5 per cent more than 12 months ago”. This was followed by Dubai, Mexico and Thailand.

Other destinations where UK holidaymakers can get more bang for their buck include Kenya, Bali, the Dominican Republic, Sri Lanka and Vietnam. “Every year travel companies report a spike in bookings immediately after Christmas as thousands of people go online or to their local travel agent to book an escape abroad,” added Brown.

“And after a year of washout weather, spur of the moment winter sun holiday bookings are more likely than ever.” If you are planning a holiday abroad, it’s important to secure travel insurance before you leave. This will keep you protected financially should need medical attention or be the victim of crime while you’re away.
