Ryanair last in ranking of short-haul airlines

Low-cost Irish airline Ryanair has attracted criticism in the past for anything from its outspoken CEO Micheal O’Leary to its outlandish suggestions including creating standing-only room on flights.

Now it appears that the budget airline has fallen out of travellers’ favour once again, after finishing bottom in a new survey by consumer magazine Which?. The airline achieved an overall satisfaction score of just 34% in a table compiled from Which? members' votes, putting it in 16th place and behind other low-cost airlines such as easyJet and flybe.

Which? said: “We were inundated with comments about Ryanair - many about its extra charges. “This partly accounts for the paltry one-star ratings for baggage allowance, boarding arrangements, seat allocation, and food and drinks.”

The most the popular short-haul airline in the ranking was Swiss, with an overall score of 82% and a maximum five-star score on a number of the rating categories. The top five was completed by Turkish Airlines (78%), Lufthansa (75%), Aer Lingus (74%) and KLM (67%).

Only airlines which received at least 30 responses were considered in the raking, and while Ryanair's results were based on 563 responses the other airlines in the top five fell under 100 responses. Swiss's results were based on 59 responses, Turkish Airlines on 38, Lufthansa 74 and Aer Lingus 65. The last five places in the top 10 were claimed by British Airways (67%), SAS (65%) TAP Portugal (64%), Air Malta (62%) and Jet2.com (61%).

A Which? spokesperson added: “The airlines topping our survey received flying colours for their good customer service and value for money. No-frills airlines will have to do more to cut down on the extra charges for baggage allowance, seat allocation and food and drink if they're to see their ratings really take off.” In terms of long-haul airlines, Air New Zealand achieved the top score (86%) in the ranking, with a maximum five stars in several categories including for airline staff.
