Brits make their Christmas getaway from Gatwick

British holidaymakers have already begun their mass exodus for festive season, with around 700,000 people expected to depart from Gatwick airport between 17 December and 2 January.

The UK’s second largest airport revealed that the busiest departure day will be Sunday 23 December, when 56,000 passengers are predicted to be heading off on their Christmas break. Switzerland, Edinburgh and Dubai have been named as the top three destinations Gatwick passengers choose for their Christmas or New Year celebrations.

Recent research from the Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) has revealed that more Brits are also planning to head to the continent to enjoy Europe’s annual Christmas markets this year. Victoria Bacon, ABTA Head of Communications said: “Christmas shopping can often be a chore but Christmas markets take you back to a time when everything about this time of year was magical.

“The growth in popularity of the markets also supports the wider trend we are seeing of holidaymakers seeking out more authentic and local experiences.” Gatwick will be injecting some welcome Christmas cheer into the airport over the festive season, with plenty on hand to keep travellers entertained.

This includes carol singers providing a traditional soundtrack as well as the chance for families to get festive photo opportunity with Santa and his reindeer. Louisa Craven, Gatwick terminal operations, said: “This year sees a great mix of top Christmas destinations as passengers fly out to enjoy the ski season in Switzerland, visit friends and family across the UK and soak up some winter sun.

“Staff and extra helpers, including the London Ambassadors who made such a great impression during the London 2012 Olympic and Paralympic Games, will be on hand to assist at every stage to ensure our passengers enjoy a great experience at Gatwick with some fun, festive entertainment along the way.” If you are heading overseas during the Christmas season or in the New Year, it is crucial to secure the right type of travel insurance policy for your needs.
