Virgin Atlantic unveils domestic flight schedule

Virgin Atlantic has revealed that it will be launching domestic routes from London Heathrow to Scotland and Manchester from next spring.

The new schedule will comprise six return flights a day between Heathrow and Edinburgh, and three between Heathrow and Aberdeen from April next year, while three daily return flights will operate between Heathrow and Manchester from 12 March.Tickets for the new routes will go on sale on 19 December, with prices starting from £99 return.

The announcement is part of a “new era” for the airline, according to Steve Ridgway, Virgin Atlantic’s chief executive.“Throughout its history, Virgin Atlantic has successfully fought British Airways all over the world and has offered passengers a compelling alternative through our renowned product and service,” he said.

“We will look to replicate that in our short-haul flying and challenge the current BA monopoly on these routes which is causing serious consumer harm.”Low-cost airline Ryanair has also recently announced that it is expanding its services to Scotland, with eight new routes and additional flights on nine other routes from Glasgow Prestwick and Edinburgh airports in 2013.

Tourism minister Fergus Ewing recently said that the prospects for Scotland’s tourism industry in the upcoming years were bright. “There are some wonderful opportunities for Scottish tourism in the coming years, and we are working with VisitScotland to make sure that we maximise the impact of these,” he said. “2014 sees Scotland ‘Welcome the World’ with our big invitation to visit in a year when we celebrate not only our second Year of Homecoming but also host two of the world’s largest events – the Ryder Cup and Commonwealth Games.”

Recent figures from VisitScotland revealed that domestic tourism in Scotland between July 2011 and June 2012 reached £12.4 million visits, up by 3% compared to the period between July 2010 and June 2011. If you are heading on holiday, it is crucial to secure the right type of travel insurance policy for your needs.
