UK travellers admit to being an 'Idiot Abroad

The UK has been revealed as a nation of adventure-averse foreign travellers, who could give Karl Pilkington (aka the idiot abroad) a good run for his money.

Karl is currently on our screens wincing his way through a 5,000 mile journey from Venice to Eastern Europe, India and China in the third instalment of the popular series, and it seems that there are plenty of Brits who could take his place, should the hapless globetrotter finally hang up his hat.

A study by has revealed that almost half (48%) of Brits give the thumbs down to an adventure on holiday, with 52% of travellers revealing that they often ignore famous landmarks on holiday. Although the majority (85%) admitted that going on holiday was the highlight of their year, more than a third (34%) said that they share many of Karl’s negative views as he heads off the beaten track.

The research revealed that sampling foreign cuisine, learning the local lingo and visiting local sights is at the bottom of UK travellers’ must do lists. Instead, low-risk activities such as getting some much needed R&R, topping up tans and meeting new people featured at the top of Brits’ holiday priority list. The study also revealed that Brits are keen for a taste home while on their travels, with 19% visiting chains such as Starbucks or MacDonald’s at least once during their holiday, while 18% said that they would only eat English food while abroad.

Calum Macdonald from,, said: “Long working hours and busy family lives mean that our annual holiday is the only time we get to relax. “New environments and customs can be exciting for the seasoned traveller but they can cause anxiety too. So, with many people only getting one or two weeks abroad per year, they want to take it easy and not spend all their time traipsing around the local tourist spots.”

If you are heading on an overseas holiday, it is crucial to secure the right type of travel insurance policy for your needs.
