Stowaway snake on a plane captured

A vagrant snake was found on a plane at Glasgow Airport on a flight returning from Mexico.

The sneaky stowaway – believed to be an American smooth-scaled race snake – was found under a row of seats in the passenger cabin after the plane returned from Cancun, Mexico earlier this week. Unfortunately Samuel L. Jackson, who famously takes on a plane full of deadly and poisonous snakes in the cult classic film Snakes on a Plane, was not on hand to deal with the reptile. Instead animal charity SPCA was called out to deal with the 18-inch long snake.

They used a box to contain the snake, who is thought to be juvenile or middle aged. The snake was taken to the charity’s animal rescue centre in Cardonald, Glasgow, where staff have named it Furtivo because of his ‘sneaky’ ways.

The charity said that airport staff were “remarkably calm” upon finding the snake and managed to safely contain the snake. Scottish SPCA's Billy Linton is a senior inspector with more than 30 years' experience as a zoo keeper.

“We have had the snake examined by a vet and, although we can't be 100% certain, we believe he is of the Dryadophis family, which are commonly referred to as American smooth-scaled racers,” he said.“Racers aren't venomous but, like all snakes, they can bite and Furtivio is very feisty. Although small at the moment, he is still a juvenile and has a lot of growing to do.

“I can only imagine that Furtivo managed to sneak his way onto the plane while it was waiting to take off in Cancun, although it is also possible he has hitched a lift in someone's hand luggage.“ We have rescued several exotic creatures from international flights including scorpions, spiders, turtles and even giant land snails, so this isn't as unusual as many people might think. If you are travelling overseas in the near future, it’s a good idea to take out travel insurance before you leave.
