Brits urged to hit the gym before the slopes this ski season

Brits are too unfit to ski and a third of winter sports holidaymakers are not doing any physical preparation at all, a study suggests.

The Association of British Travel Agents (ABTA) is calling on skiers to get down the gym before they hit the slopes as Brits are not physically fit enough to handle a winter sports break. ABTA research shows that 33% of winter sports novices who have never been on a winter sports holiday are at serious risk of injuring themselves without doing any physical preparation.

The research also found that four in ten regular winter sports enthusiasts have injured themselves at least once on the slopes. Top British female skier, Chemmy Alcott, is supporting the Get Fit for Ski campaign. She said:

“There is no beating around the bush - skiing is a dangerous sport. But there is lots that can be done to prevent injury as much as possible - first and foremost you can get in shape before you hit the slopes. “This will result in a double whammy positive - your body will be better prepared to handle the physical excursions of skiing and you will be able to ski longer for harder thus getting more value for money!”

A third of those going on skiing or snowboarding holidays do not take out travel insurance that includes specific winter sports cover. “We strongly advise anyone going on a winter sports holiday to ensure their travel insurance policy covers them for all winter sports activities,” said Lynda St Cooke, of the Foreign and Commonwealth Office.

“We see many cases where British nationals have ended up with massive debts at the end of their holiday because their policy didn't cover them for what they were doing.” Travel insurance with winter sports cover will give you peace of mind and comprehensive cover should you be involved in an accident.
