New routes to Moscow, Morocco and Egypt launched by easyJet

Budget airline easyJet has launched three new routes from Stansted Airport to Marrakesh, Sharm el Sheikh and Sofia, as well as one from Gatwick Airport to Moscow for the first time.

The no-frills carrier is adding longer flights to its growing portfolio and was given the green light to offer its first service to Moscow from the UK. Flying from London Gatwick, easyJet won the route over Virgin Atlantic after offering better value for customers. It claims that flights were unlikely to exceed £125 for the first three years.

British Airways already provides a service to the Russian capital. In addition to this, easyJet will fly year-round to Marrakech, Morocco, from Stansted three times a week. Flights will depart on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays from 15 February 2013.

A twice-weekly service to Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, will also come into effect next year. The low-fares carrier will operate flights on Thursdays and Sundays from 17 February. Another route joining easyJet’s growing collection is to Sofia, Bulgaria. This starts on 16 February and will operate on Thursdays and Sundays.

The airline will operate an Airbus A320 on two services between London Gatwick and Moscow Domodedovo airport. “easyJet is delighted to have been awarded the rights to fly between London Gatwick and Moscow. We believe this is the right decision for consumers both in the UK and Russia,” said Carolyn McCall, Chief Executive of easyJet.

“Russia has a fast growing economy and is a country rich in culture and history. We believe that our flights will be popular with both business and leisure travellers alike,” she added. “easyJet has proved again and again that when we enter a new market we open it up - bringing in competition and lower fares and enabling more people to travel on the route.” It could be worth taking out travel insurance before you leave, for peace of mind when heading overseas.
