Yorkshire voted best place to holiday in UK

Lush greenery, quaint English villages, national parks and tearooms make Yorkshire the best place to holiday in the UK, according to the World Travel Awards.

The county came out on top in the 19th annual World Travel Awards, as voted for by travel agents around the world. More than 216 million people visit Yorkshire each year, making it more popular than Cornwall, Cumbria, Devon, the Peak District, Scotland and Wales.

Gary Verity, the chief executive of Welcome to Yorkshire, said: “The win is testament to all the thousands of fantastic businesses we have in Yorkshire that time and again put the county on the map for millions of holidaymakers, not just in Britain, but the world over.” In the first nine months of the year alone the number of international tourists who visited Yorkshire increased by 12%.

The tourist board is currently campaigning to bring even more people to the country by hosting the Tour de France in 2016. Some 150,000 people have already backed the Yorkshire bid, which faces stiff competition from Barcelona, Venice, Berlin and Scotland.

One great way to enjoy the Yorkshire Dales and the countyside would be to take a hire car and road trip around the rolling hillsides and villages. If you are hiring a vehicle it could be worth taking out car hire excess insurance for extra financial protection. Whilst Yorkshire was voted the best place to holiday in the UK, Edinburgh was crowned Europe’s leading destination for 2012.

Beating Amsterdam, Barcelona, Berlin, Paris, Rome and London, this was the first time that the vibrant Scottish city won the award. The EDF Energy London Eye won the award for Europe’s Leading Tourist Attraction and the capital also won the award for Europe’s Leading City Break Destination.
