Staff to keep jobs after 11-year-old flew to Rome

Three airline staff who were suspended after an 11-year-old child flew from Manchester to Rome unaccompanied without a boarding pass, have kept their jobs.

Schoolboy Liam Corcoran managed to surpass five separate security checks at Manchester Airport before boarding a Jet2.com flight to Rome in July. He was only found en route to the Italian capital after fellow passengers became concerned and suspicious. Subsequently, the 11-year-old was brought back to Britain on the return flight.

The sneaky youngster followed another family through security before walking through the departure gate and on to the aircraft. He was never asked to present any documents including a passport and boarding pass.

While it is not legal for cabin crew to do so, they will often carry out a head count on board the aircraft. Jet2.com staff did not do so on this particular occasion. As a result, members of staff were suspended and an inquiry was launched, but the airline has now confirmed that the three staff members have returned to work.

“Following a full and thorough investigation, revised procedures have been implemented,” a spokesman told the Manchester Evening News. “Head counts are now in place across each of our flights from all airports, and additional staff training has been carried out across the business. We continue to liaise closely with Manchester Airport regarding security processes.” In a separate security blunder at Manchester Airport, a member of security was suspended after failing to spot a fake bomb as it passed through an X-ray machine.

The test was carried out for the Department for Transport who often spot-check UK airports to test effectiveness of airport security. “We have a regular programme of inspections to ensure compliance with this regime, but do not comment on the specifics or outcomes for obvious reasons,” a spokesman said. It would be advisable to take out comprehensive travel insurance before flying abroad.
