New York City to build world’s biggest Ferris wheel

New York; home to the Statue of Liberty, the Empire State Building, Central Park and now the latest tourist attraction, a giant Ferris wheel.

The city that never sleeps recently revealed plans to bump up tourism on Staten Island by building the world’s largest Ferris wheel. Staten Island, sometimes known as the ‘forgotten borough’ of the city is set to receive a facelift and attract millions of tourists to the city as a result of the new wheel.

The Ferris wheel, which will be about half the height of the Empire State Building, and will provide breathtaking views of the Statue of Liberty, New York Harbour and the Manhattan skyline. The 625-foot (190-metre) structure will be higher than the Singapore Flyer and the London Eye. Each one of the 36 capsules can carry up to 40 passengers and would show stunning views of the world-famous city.

Developers for the observation wheel believe that the structure will attract a massive 30,000 riders a day during the peak season and 4.5 million visitors per year. The latest addition to New York’s tourist attraction list will be open every day of the year, except during severe weather. It is expected to open in 2015.

In addition to the wheel, Staten Island could also benefit from a retail complex with 100 designer outlet stores, theatre space, restaurants and cafes. The wheel would also eclipse the proposed Las Vegas ‘High Roller’ which was labelled as the world’s tallest Ferris wheel when plans were revealed in July.

The Las Vegas High Roller structure will be 550 feet high and will be built just three miles south of Las Vegas Boulevard. The project, by Caesars Entertainment Corp. is set to open in 2013. Whichever tourist attraction you intent on visiting, it could be worth taking out travel insurance before you set off.
