Croatia a popular hotspot for British tourists

The number of Britons heading to Croatia has increased by almost a quarter this year, according to the latest figures.

Figures from the Croatian National Tourist Office show that a staggering 241,443 Britons visited Croatia between January and August this year. That’s a 23% rise on the same time last year, yet still short of its record annual total of 500,000 British visitors in 1990.

A rising number of holidaymakers are choosing to take a break in Croatia as the country had a total of 9.82 million visitors in the year to August, marking a 4.22% rise on 2011 figures. Croatia has become increasingly popular over the last decade as a cheap holiday destination that offers sun, sea, and good value for money.

The Croatian tourism minister, Velijko Ostojic, claims that the country is set for another record-breaking year based on figures from the first eight months of 2012. Tour operator Prestige Holidays experience a massive 200% increase in bookings to Croatia this year, with Dubrovnik being the most popular holiday destination. Most holidaymakers visiting Croatia start on the Adriatic coast and the nations islands.

Dubrovnik is now a UNESCO world heritage site and offers a host of exciting activities for travellers. In addition to overlooking the calm waters of the Adriatic, the city offers a number of attractions for all types of tourists. An influx of budget carriers offering routes to Croatia has also helped increase the flow of tourism, and more new routes to the country are starting next year.

The country will see two new air routes in 2013, with Jet2 flying to Pula from Leeds-Bradford from May next year. British Airways has also launched a new route, with flights to Zagreb from London Heathrow re-starting in December this year. Those heading overseas might wish to take travel insurance before they leave, so they are protected financially should the worst happen.
