September holiday bookings soar following washout summer

Brits looking to cure post Olympic blues are going in search of some September sun, new figures show.

Holiday bookings are expected to rocket this month now that Olympic fever has died down during the wettest UK summer for 100 years. New figures from foreign exchange company, Travelex, show that Britons are expected to make 5.7 million trips overseas this month.

Around a quarter of those polled are taking breaks because they did not want to miss out on the London 2012 Olympic Games. Elvin Eldic from Travelex said: "It's clear that this is a great time of year to be heading away to catch some last-minute summer sun following one of the wettest summers on record."

The sporting event gripped the nation for the duration of the summer so it might come as no surprise that a number of Brits have delayed their typical holiday plans. Nearly half (45%) said they did not take their usual summer break during the typical six week school holiday period. Almost a quarter (23%) said this would be the first time they have ventured overseas during September.

Mandy Round, general manager of low-fare airline easyJet said: "The Olympics created a party atmosphere that lifted the spirits of the nation. "As soon as the last race had been run and the Olympic torch extinguished, our holidays website saw an uplift in bookings in September - not just to beach destinations such as Majorca, Egypt and the Costa del Sol but also to city break destinations."

Spain remains a firm favourite amongst British holidaymakers as the most popular holiday destination of choice along with Egypt , Turkey and other travel hotpsots. Those in search of some September sun should remember buy travel insurance in advance; to provide peace of mind and financial security should the worst happen.
