Holidaymakers could save hundreds by flying out on a Tuesday

Holidaymakers could save over £300 by flying out on a Tuesday, according to an intriguing new study.

Tuesday is the cheapest day of the week to fly out of the UK with some leading airlines, a report by consumer group Which? has revealed. The study of 1,174 September flights with leading UK airlines including British Airways (BA), easyJet and Ryanair to a number of popular destinations found that Tuesday was the cheapest day to go.

Flights with BA between Heathrow and Barcelona, easyJet between Gatwick and Alicante and Ryanair between Stansted and Dublin for one person with one piece of ‘checked-in’ luggage were assessed. Friday and Saturday were the most expensive days to fly with BA, Friday was the most expensive for easyJet and Sunday was the most expensive for Ryanair.

The cheapest option across the carriers varied, however, Which? found that those flying with easyJet would pay around 45% more for a return flight on Sunday between Gatwick and Alicante than if they returned on a Thursday. This could save the family of four £224 and depending on other airlines, times and destinations, holidaymakers could save up to £336. Mid-week inbound flights were the cheapest, with the lowest average prices available being from Tuesday to Thursday. The cheapest time of day to travel varies significantly across the airlines. Despite a number of holidaymakers believing that the most inexpensive flights are in the early hours, this was only true of BA.

Some 86% of BA’s cheapest outbound flights were before 7.30 am and 86% of its cheapest inbound flights were in the evening. easyJet flights, however, were more expensive in the mornings with the priciest flights being between 5.45am and 11am. Return flights were the most expensive in the early afternoon with the low fares airline.

Richard Lloyd, executive director of Which?, said: ‘With household budgets squeezed, holidaymakers will want to make sure they are getting a good deal on their flights. 'We found that people can save a significant sum of money if they shop around and can be flexible, changing the day or time they choose to travel.’ It would be advisable to take out travel insurance for peace of mind.
