Moscow hotels most expensive in the world

Moscow can now boast that it has the most expensive hotels in the world for a whopping eight consecutive years.

The Russian capital came out on top in a recent survey of average room rates across 50 major world cities. A one-night stay typically costs travellers just under £260.

The annual study, carried out by travel management company the Hogg Robinson Group (HRG) found that Moscow hotels were on average 20% more expensive than anywhere else.

The second most expensive destination for holiday accommodation was Lagos in Nigeria. The study found that the average room rates in the city started from £217 a night.

This is largely due to a “high volume of inbound business travel connected with the oil industry.” The looming security issues in the city have also prompted travellers to choose high-end hotels.

Hotel accommodation in Geneva will set travellers back an average of £216 per night, about £12 less than last year – pushing the city into third place on the list.

The average room rate across other European cities also fell. Hotel prices in Barcelona, Madrid and Dublin have all fallen by nearly a quarter in the last 12 months.

The largest hotel increase rate in the same period was seen in Latin America. Rio de Janeiro, which is hosting both the 2016 Olympics as well as the football World Cup in 2014, has seen prices grow by 15%.

In Sao Paulo, the average cost of a night’s stay jumped by more than a fifth. Prices in Mexico City have also increased by nearly a third since the last survey.

Despite the 2012 Olympic Games, London rates rose just by 5% to an average of £164 per night – putting it 21st in the study.

If you are heading abroad on holiday soon, travel insurance can help give you peace of mind while you’re away.
