11-year-old boy slips airport security and takes free flight to Rome

An investigation is being launched after an 11-year-old boy managed to take a flight to Rome, somehow slipping past Manchester Airport security.

The child snuck onto a plane at Manchester Airport without a boarding pass, passport or any money and was only discovered once the plane landed at Fiumicino airport in Rome. 11-year-old Liam Corcoran boarded the Jet2 flight earlier this week after allegedly following a family through to Terminal 1.

Security staff at the airport scanned him but they failed to realise that he was on his own without a boarding pass. Staff at Manchester Airport have been suspended following the revelation that the youngster managed to avoid five critical security checks.

A spokesman for the airport called the mishap an “extremely serious matter”, claiming that the issue will be urgently investigated by officials at the airport and airline. “It is clear that documentation has not been checked correctly at security and the boarding gate,” he added. “The boy went through full security screening so the safety of passengers and the aircraft was never compromised.”

The schoolboy had run away from his mother when she was shopping in central Manchester, before making the three-mile journey to the airport from Wythenshawe Civic Centre. Concerned passengers alerted cabin crewmembers about the young boy, revealing the major discrepancy.

The airport notified his mother that he was safe, but that he was on a plane to Italy. Once the plane landed in Italy, Liam was told to remain on the aircraft until it took off again to return to Manchester airport. “We are fully investigating the incident as a matter of urgency and the staff involved have been suspended during this investigation,” a Jet2 spokesman said. Whether you’re travelling with children or not, and regardless of whether they’re yours or not, taking out travel insurance is always advisable.
