Worst destinations for weight-gain revealed

The worst holiday destinations for putting on weight have been revealed in a poll, with Turkey and Cyprus topping the list.

The Mediterranean country of Cyprus was top of the list, which was compiled by holiday company Thomas Cook, with the likes of Kebabs, tsatziki and Baklava all contributing to holidaymakers’ waistlines.

While many Brits go on holiday to relax, unwind and treat themselves to an indulgence or two, few are pleased with the effect it has on their body.

So those looking to get away but keep the summer figure would do well to avoid both Cyprus and Turkey. The research found that visitors to these countries gain an average of 1.5kg and 1.38kg respectively.

Other European destinations on the list include Portugal, which results in an average of 1.3kg gained, and Greece, where you’ll be in danger of piling on 0.92kg.

But it isn’t just European destinations that are guilty of expanding our waistlines, as the US was found to be the fourth-worst destination for weight gain.

It was found that a trip stateside can result in an average of 1.08kg of extra weight. Australia was also in the top ten, with holidaymakers gaining an average of 0.5kg on a trip down under.

A ‘staycation’, a popular choice amongst cash-strapped Brits trying to holiday on a budget, could be a healthier choice this year. A stay in the UK will result in an average weight gain of just 0.24kg.

Other healthy destinations on the list include Ireland, Canada and Germany, which were the only countries where the average visitor actually lost weight.

The survey also revealed that one in five Brits felt that putting on weight while away had spoilt their holiday.

If you are planning a trip abroad this year, remember to take out travel insurance before you go. This will protect you financially should you have an accident on have something stolen.
