British holidaymakers heading overseas during Olympics

Millions of Britons are expected to visit sunnier shores to escape the 2012 London Olympic Games this summer, despite Government campaigns.

VisitEngland’s ‘staycation’ campaign, featuring a number of British celebrities such as Stephen Fry, Julie Walters and Rupert Grint, in a series of scenic English locations aims to promote the UK as a holiday destination.

The £4 million pound television advert, however, appears to have been unsuccessful in convincing the nation to opt for a holiday in the UK this summer.

Research from a number of tour operators and travel agents highlighted that British holidaymakers are looking to head overseas for a summer break instead of enjoying the Olympic Games in the UK.

The wet weather, Olympics inflation and the growing strength of the pound against the euro is pushing Brits towards cheaper European destinations. One pound now equates to more than €1.20n an increase off 10% compared to last summer’s prices. As a number of popular European holiday destinations, such as Greece, Portugal, Italy and Spain see their economies weaken, Brits get better value for money.

Research from lastminute.com revealed that bookings for holidays between 27 July and 12 August have increased by 207% since last year. Further research from Amadeus, a travel technology provider, suggests that around one in five British adults will take a foreign trip during the Olympic Games.

Diane Bouzebiba, managing director of Amadeus said: “While the Olympics undoubtedly presents a very exciting prospect for a lot of people, our survey shows that there are also plenty who are looking to get away.” A survey by YouGove revealed that the government campaign has failed to sway opinions, as 67% of respondents said that the advert made no difference to their holiday plans and. A further 4% even said that the advert would actually prevent them from choosing a ‘staycation’.

Wherever you are heading this summer, if you are going abroad it is a good idea to take out travel insurance   before you leave.
