Europe’s cheapest holiday destinations revealed

Bulgaria and Turkey have been named as the cheapest holiday spots for British holidaymakers this year, after a study of the most popular destinations in Europe.

Research by the Post Office has revealed the cheapest travel destinations for the summer, with traditional hot spots such as Spain and France losing out. The increasing strength of the pound has put up to 14% more travel cash back into the pockets of Brits, but the cost of a holiday is still going up.

So, the Post Office put together its Holiday Costs Barometer, which looked at the cost of a basket of typical holiday goods in 15 European and mid-haul destinations.

“Resort prices and currency exchange rates are always changing so it is worth doing some research to check the latest position before booking a holiday,” said Andrew Brown, head of Travel Money at the Post Office. The Eastern European country of Bulgaria was found to be the cheapest for the ten holiday items, which included a three-course meal, an English tabloid and suncream. At £42.79 for the entire basket of goods, Bulgaria was well ahead of its rivals and was even 4% cheaper than a year ago.

“The Holiday Costs Barometer includes the price of one meal but, if you eat out every night, the difference in cost between destinations can be quite marked,” said Mr Brown. “For example, according to our research, eating out for seven nights in either Bulgaria or Portugal will cost less than £175 but over £280 in Spain, France or Malta,” he added. Spain used to hold the top spot for cheap holiday destinations, but slipped to fourth place this year after escalating meal costs pushed its overall costs up by 35%.

Turkey was the runner up in the Holiday Cost Barometer, with the cost of the holiday items coming to a total of £54.22. If you are planning a trip abroad this year, investing in travel insurance is vital to prevent losing out financially while you’re away.
