Ryanair considers surcharge on flights to Spain

Budget airline Ryanair is threatening to impose a surcharge on all flights to Spain, in a dispute over airport fees.

The controversial airline has written to passengers warning them that they may have to pay an additional fee before boarding. The extra fee could be levied against millions of Ryanair passengers, despite the fact that they’ve already booked and paid in full.

The airline sent an email to passengers recently, warning them that they might have to pay the backdated fair.

“We may be forced to debit passengers for any government imposed increases in airport charges prior to your travel date,” the email to passengers said. “If any such tax, fee or charge is introduced or increased after your reservation has been made you will be obliged to pay it (or any increase) prior to departure.” Passengers were told that they may not be able to board their flight if they refuse to pay the surcharge.

The extra fees are the result of a dispute over airport charges, which the Spanish government is considering. According to Ryanair’s Chief Executive Michael O’Leary, the proposals would see fees double at the country’s two main airports, Madrid and Barcelona. Passengers will not be allowed to board should they refuse to pay the surcharge, but O’Leary said that they would be permitted to cancel their flight and receive a full refund.

So far, Ryanair is the only airline to pass on the additional charges to its passengers in this way. British Airways has said it will absorb any increase in airport fees. Expenses like surcharges and extra costs can make going on holiday very pricey. While travel insurance is another expense, it can save you money in the long run. By investing in travel insurance, you can protect yourself financially should you have an accident or be the victim of theft.
