Tourists warned of Stansted strike action

Holidaymakers planning a trip over the Easter bank holiday weekend are being warned of possible delays at Stansted Airport, as the airport’s baggage handlers vote to go on strike.

It was announced that 150 baggage handlers at the airport, who are part of the union GMB, voted for industrial action over the Easter weekend.

The baggage handlers voted in favour of a strike after changes to their shifts were made by their employer Swissport.

It is claimed that the changes to shifts could result in pay cuts of as much as £1,000 per person, each year. As well as this, the GMB union has claimed that the proposed changes by Swissport will also require baggage handlers to work an extra 13 times each year.

The GMB union said the strike would go ahead on Good Friday, Easter Saturday and Easter Sunday unless urgent talks were held with Swissport. “Unless there are urgent talks and a settlement this vote for action will result in disruption over the Easter bank holiday weekend,” said Gary Pearce, a GMB union organiser. “The travelling public need to be aware that it has been this aggressive move by Swissport to cut our members pay at a time of high inflation that has led to this strike vote,” he added.

GMB union has said that industrial action was a last resort, claiming it has already asked Swissport to reconsider the proposed pay cuts, as well as offering alternative solutions to the conflict. “Swissport claim they have lost work on the Ryanair contract at the airport. GMB baggage handlers have seen no evidence of this,” added Mr Pearce. If you are planning a holiday over the Easter weekend, remember to take out travel insurance before you leave. Some policies will cover things like disruption and delays, to ensure you’re not left out of pocket.
