easyJet celebrates ten years at Gatwick

Budget airline easyJet has been celebrating ten years since its first service from London Gatwick Airport was launched.

The low-cost airline first started operating from London’s second biggest airport back in 2002, with a flight to Barcelona..

Since that maiden voyage, easyJet is now the biggest operator at Gatwick Airport with more than 300 flights to and from the airport every day.

“We’re excited to be celebrating a decade of service to passengers at Gatwick Airport and are proud that we have grown to become the largest airline at the airport in that time,” said Catherine Lynn, easyJet's Customer and Revenue Director..

“Our success is testament to easyJet’s commitment to listening to our passengers and adding routes to the destinations they tell us they want to fly to at the most convenient times. Our mission is to make travel easy and affordable and we are dedicated to sustaining further growth over the coming years. Since that first flight from Gatwick back in 2002, easyJet has flown more than 70 million passengers across Europe, North Africa and the Middle East from the airport.

The airline is celebrated its tenth birthday at the airport with commemorative gifts for passengers, as well as entertainment in the check-in areas and departure lounges.“Since Gatwick’s change of ownership just over two years ago, easyJet has introduced 20 new routes for their passengers and increased the number of aircraft based here to 50, opening up even more travel options for their passengers,” said Guy Stephenson, Gatwick Airport’s Chief Commercial Officer.“ We look forward to another decade of working with easyJet and supporting their ambitions for growth and to providing passengers with a great service.” The budget airline enjoyed a strong year last year, with new routes around Europe. It also announced an extension to its partnership with Europcar, to provide car hire to passengers.
