Brits planning Jubilee getaway

Millions of Brits are planning to take advantage of the long Diamond Jubilee weekend by going on holiday, research has revealed.

Travel Association ABTA has been looking into people’s plans for the long weekend, when we’ll be getting an extra day off work to celebrate the Queen’s 60 years on the throne.

ABTA’s research revealed that one in ten Brits is planning a trip either abroad or in the UK over the Diamond Jubilee celebration weekend. Mark Tanzer Chief Executive of ABTA.”

It was found that 4% of people are planning a trip abroad over the extended weekend, which is similar to the travel numbers seen at Easter.

It seems that the younger generation are not as Royalist as the rest of the population, with 12% of 18-24 year olds planning a trip abroad or within the UK. “Like last year’s Royal Wedding, the Jubilee shows that extra bank holidays not only give us a chance to recharge our batteries but also give an extremely welcome boost to tourism and many parts of the wider economy,” added Mr Tanzer. The research also found that many of us are planning a Jubilee street party to celebrate the Queen’s time on the throne.

It was found that more than two million of us are planning Jubilee street parties, potentially creating scenes last seen in 1977 for the Queen’s Silver Jubilee. “The country clearly has a great deal of affection for the Queen with millions intending to have a Jubilee party,” added Mr Tanzer. The millions who are planning to make the most of the long summer weekend are being reminded to plan ahead. Travel insurance should be bought well in advance, and plans should be made to avoid large crowds.
