Krakow named as EU's best city break destination

With its low prices, impressive cultural history and diverse range of attractions Poland has been a mecca for city breakers on a budget for more than a decade.

PolandThe latest research from Which? Travel magazine survey has confirmed that Poland still has pride of place in holidaying Brits' hearts after one of the country's oldest cities was named as the best destination for a weekend on the continent outside of the UK.

Questioning magazine readers on their views on 47 different European destinations Kraków achieved the best score of all the 4,585 holiday experiences included in the survey. This came in at an impressive 94%!

The city's appeal is not hard to see, with its intricate architecture receiving several nods from UNESCO's World Heritage list and 'must-see' stops on the tourist trail including the Wawel Hill castle complex and the Oskar Schindler enamel factory museum.

Poland's second most populous city also achieved five star scores in the areas below:

  • Warm welcome
  • Food and drink
  • Value for money

Another Polish city recently came up trumps in the affordability stakes, with a hotels.com survey naming Warsaw as the cheapest destination for a five-star hotel stay.

A stay in a five star hotel in the city came in at an average of $130 per night.

"We've identified some very popular destinations where you can find five-star hotels at a fraction of the cost of other larger cities," said Hotels.com travel expert Taylor L. Cole in a statement.

Travellers who are keen to sample the delights of Kraków or Warsaw can fly to either city with EasyJet, Ryanair and Jet2.com.

Further figures from the survey revealed that two-thirds of cities included in the research achieved scores of more than 60%.

Following Krakow's lead with similarly high scores were Munich and Prague – each with 93%. In contrast, Milan and Naples sat at the bottom of the ranking with respective scores of 62% and 64%.

If you are heading off for a weekend break, it is important to organise short-haul travel insurance in advance.
