Thomas Cook has recently said that they have decided to extend their ban on booking to the resort Sharm el-Sheikh, this is because the UK Government has advised not to travel to the area. Flights were suspended to Sharm el-Sheikh back in November 2015, after an incident occurred where a Russian passenger plane crashed in to the central killing all 224 people that were on board.
Thomas Cook had been making bookings to start from the 25th May 2016 thinking that the travel ban would have been lifted by now. However, because the ban is yet to be lifted the airline is forbidden to make bookings to the destination. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website states that ‘terrorists continue to plan and conduct attacks in Egypt. Further attacks are likely’ and the website also states that travel to Sharm el-Sheikh is not to happen unless it is absolutely essential. The advice provided by The Foreign and Commonwealth Office has had implications, not just to tour operators but also for travel insurance, as it will prove to be almost impossible to obtain cover to travel to the region.
A spokesperson from Thomas Cook has stated that customers who have booked travel to Sharm el-Sheikh can either cancel or book an alternative holiday. “We appreciate that this may be frustrating for our customers who have been looking forward to their holiday and we would like to assure them that we are doing our upmost to ensure they are still able to enjoy a Thomas Cook holiday”. The Foreign and Commonwealth Office website further stated that “We will continue working with the Egyptian Authorities to enable regular flights between the UK and Sharm el-Sheikh to resume. We are also liaising with travel companies so that they are able to resume flights and holidays in Sharm el-Sheikh as soon as appropriate security arrangements are in place”.
