Exploring France’s best Christmas markets from a motor home

If you are yet to make any festive plans, or just fancy a getaway, hiring a motor home and taking in Europe’s best Christmas markets could be just what you need.

With the delights of France within easy reach, you could combine a European trip with a chance to do plenty of Christmas shopping!

Christmas markets, while once traditionally confined to major German cities, are now found in most European hubs – and France is no exception.

The roads will generally be quieter in the winter than at the height of summer, meaning travel should be easier, while camp grounds are significantly cheaper.

Where to visit

France is home to the second highest number of Christmas markets in Europe, and the L’Arche de Noel a la Defense is the largest in Paris.

With 350 stalls, the Christmas stalls contrast perfectly with the skyscrapers that surround it in the nosiness district and you’ll find delicious food, festive decorations and crafts in abundance.

The illuminated streets of Montbeluard, in the Bourgogne-Franche-Comte region, around eight miles from the Swiss border, are another must-see. The market itself is packed full of local craft products that you’ll struggle to find anywhere else.

In Lille, you’ll find around 100 stalls packed into the Place Rihour while Grand Place features a huge ferris wheel which towers over the market offering views across the city.

For something a little different, discover the dry ski slope and festive market in Reims, another set in the shadow of a magnificent cathedral.

Carollers keep the mood festive as you wander among nearly 150 wooden chalets selling everything from decorations to local delicacies.

And a trip around France wouldn’t be complete without a visit to France’s oldest Christmas market in Strasbourg.

With 300 stalls, many of which are found in front of the city’s gothic cathedral, the market has been hosted in the city dating back to the 16th century.

These are just a handful of the festive markets in France, and all have their own unique charm.
